War Memorial on HHS Grounds
Feb 16th, 2010 at 6:37pm

Hi - I am not sure if I mentioned this way back when we started out, but I used to roller skate (in the 50's) inside the War Memorial that was on HHS grounds, corner of Parmelee and Warburton - no one I have spoken to on here or those classmates I have been in contact with remember, but here is part of what June '55 sent to me today.  She is the only person who remembers it, besides me - I am so happy, happy, happy! Pat '65  It is a small wonder we didn't bump into each other, except for the fact that we are ten years apart, which explains it. Actually there probably won't have been that much room for the two of us, on the War Memorial and/or we'd be constantly bumping into each other and perhaps getting hurt, as that was hard and cold to fall on, there.  But I can certainly 'shed some light' for you, as I did EXACTLY the same thing as you: I was constantly going over there and rolling skating. Round and round I'd go around the half of it (the back part of it) and then the open front where, as you said, was ALL open and had the names  behind a glass, curved area, and it was truly beautiful with that cold  marble that was a pinkish beige as you recalled. It is a shame that it is not there any longer, but I spent a LOT of time there, by myself, as there didn't seem to be anyone around who my age, that lived in that area, to play with.  THANK YOU JUNE - YOU MADE MY YEAR!  Smiley

You are most welcome, Pat-! It was a pleasure to have my memory jolted by you, about the War Memorial as a matter of fact. BTW can you give me any last names of the missing in your class yet? I can also add:
Yep, I also was at the Paterson Rollar Skating  Rink, off Market Street, in Paterson, every single Saturday-!!! I was very impressed with the Vega(spelling?) girls that adorned calendars and I cut them out and pasted them on the inside of my rollar skating case, which I still recall as being silver with red edging on it,(on the outside.) It's funny the things one remembers from one's youth. It's sometimes the small insignificent things, that stay with you.
