Too often, we forget that comedians can be very serious, having profound insight, possessing the skills to share those insights, moving and stirring the emotions of those who listen, reminding us of essential truths, providing us again with an understanding of what is important.  I see early  comedians such as Red Skelton, Jack Benny, Sid Ceasar, Ernie Kovacs, and others as the models for more recent comedians who also seek to share serious information (e.g., Bill Cosby, and the late George Carlin).  Men and women who have the skill to make us laugh are able to do so because they possess insight: regarding these professional "clowns" as "mere clowns" in a pejorative sense misses the point of their genius.
