You be so shmart Pat!  I figured that just based on what little has been said ... I've credited Ralphie all along for being the Dad and wearing the apron as well ... kinda reminiscent of "The Courtship of Eddie's Father" ....  Smiley

The bottom line is all women do not make good mothers.  Many times the fathers are better parents....that's just the way it is.

In reference to the photo above, yes this pizza place is definitely the former Toto's.  My husband and I have been patrons there for the last 21 years and know the current owner very well.  In fact my both of my kids have worked there during college and high school.  Toto died some years back and the property is now owned by his sons.  Villa Rosa has great food, very reasonable prices and it's BYOB.

our alternate phone number (teenagers HAD to have their own number in the 1960s, today I guess they need their own PHONES!) was one digit away from Toto's and so often rang when we weren't already yacking on that line that my father asked Toto to change the number. Toto rebuffed the request so my father did what only the annoyed could do! He started taking orders for PIZZAs! Toto's soon woke up to the loss of orders - many customers redialed the correct number and gave Toto a piece of how much they did mind not getting the pies they had ordered. Did the trick. My late father was a fabulous man, and Hawthorne now has a damn fine chip off the old block in my brother, Mayor Richard S. Goldberg!

Mark, this site started out being a place for HHS alumni but decided on its own to be something else. Like Ellen said, it's really about life in...and having grown up in...a (relatively) small town somewhere in North Jersey known as Hawthorne.

Interestingly enough, this common thread has created a sub-community (this site) all in itself. People from all over the country, who would never have otherwise met, have become close friends here just from the fact that we spent a time of our lives in Hawthorne. A town that most folks drive right by on Rt 208 on their way to someplace else.

From time to time I toyed with the idea of changing the name of this site to something more 'Hawthorne town' related, rather than Hawthorne High School related, but always decided against it because I didn't want to mess with the formula. The site really just drives itself.

We have many active people here who never went to HHS. Heck, we even have some people on this site who moved away from Hawthorne as kids, but somehow cared enough about the town to register on this site. That kind of blows my mind.

We even have registered members here who span multiple generations of graduates. Even whole families.

Maybe this site is not really so much a sub-community as much as it is something of an extended family. Most of us have become close. We've had a lot of laughs and some quarrels. A whole bunch of us have networked with people who have offered a helping hand in time of need...even if that helping hand was just some words of encouragement.

Mark, we're all glad you're here. And, we're also glad your sister Jane is registered, too.

Now, tell your brother to get his butt signed up.

and now has also joined our other brother Dr. Robert B. Goldberg, HHS Class of 1970. Amazingly, looking at all FOUR of us, you'd think he and Rich were older than I am but no luck. I'm the eldest, Class of 1968

Any chance that you are related to Melvin Greenberg, HHS59 grad? I am helping the class locate their missing and Mel is the ONLY ONE not accounted for as yet.Their reunion is coming up mid-Oct.  There IS rumor that Mel died in late 1990s' but need to find out his birth date from records @HHS to 'match up' to a deceased  gentlemen by that name, that hailed from Queens, NY. (Actually, in 1959 yearbook, Mel's address is listed only as: Brooklyn, New York.)

Joyce- You went to school with my daughter Connie; would you like to be put in touch with her? You'd be mighty surprised at what she is doing nowadays! I'll send you a Personal Message  of how you can get in touch with her if you'd like to renew your friendship.

I just noticed this message.
Dr Frank and Dr Carolyn took care of my sons after they were born in Valley Hos. but living up in Landing we had to get dr's closer.

  The DeMaria's were great.

Y'all brought back some fun memories of hanging out at Toto's and Palermo's.  Yes it was the best pizza ever!  I lived right next door to it when it was by the firehouse.  Went to Roosevelt School back then.  Lived on Lafayette Ave across from Dr. Bonifacio when I attended High School and Wagaraw Road when I graduated.

I loved walking to school and stopping at the candy store on the corner just a block before Roosevelt School.  Penny candies and cigarettes for 2 cents each up front in the glass case.

After school, walking through Goffle Brook Park was always an adventure. People from Paterson trying to steal the ducks, meeting ice skaters in the winter and friends jumping out from the bushes in the summers.

I always had to stop at Spann's Bakery before going home. Their spice cakes, sprills and chocolate tarts were to die for!  It's amazing I didn't get fat!

I truly think that the pet peeves we have about English were reinforced by all our teachers at the high school.  I had Ms. Staples all four years.  She was the sentence conjugator from hell.  Forget spelling!  She would use that red pen and make sure you not only knew how to spell the word but also its definition and how to properly use it in a sentence.

Yes, I am like y'all. Grammar errors drive me crazy!

I bought my first brand new car from Hawthorne Chevy.  I thought it was funny that Patty Ford's father worked at a Chevy Dealer.  Her brother was Whitey Ford.  Nova Concourse Cabriolette custom ordered from the factory and Beth Hicks was the first to ride with me when I picked it up from the dealer.

Well, it's been hard to keep up with all the topics that have been spoken about here but I think I held my end up pretty well.  One last item is that my father, uncle and cousins all graduated from HHS. Go BEARS!

The Dr.'s DeMaria's still have their office in Hohokus but retired just a few years ago. They took great care of my son also, but they are in their 70's now.
